Rainbow by Alena Lazareva is a collection of 36 line art illustrations. The book is A4 in size and glue-bound. It is printed by Amazon Createspace so the paper is only thin. The illustrations however are on one side of the paper and so you can use markers on this (just place a piece of paper behind to prevent any bleedthrough). The paper is smooth however so it takes pencil well better than some older Createspace printed books. The front cover features a glossy illustration of one of Alena’s beautiful digital drawings, which is the first page to colour inside the book.

The designs in this book are rather eclectic and unlike many of Alena’s other books which are themed, this one has a variety of illustrations ranging from birds and flowers to fairy mushroom houses, mermaids, children, beautiful women and animals. With a total of 36 different designs and a bonus extra 10 illustration sample pages to colour from Alena’s previous books (7 of which are greyscale). This is good value for money and will give you a good variety of Alena’s work.

I chose to colour this lovely lady from Rainbow. Using Prismacolour Premier Pencils. I first used Sienna Brown (PC9450 to add the shadows around her nose, neck, shoulders, bones and hairline. My main colour for skin is Light Peach (PC927) which I use to add a base and to blend with. I alternate between the light peach and various pinks and peaches and if I want darker shadows usually add some dark brown (PC946). I keep adding layers until I am happy with the result.

Rainbow by Alena Lazareva is available to buy from Amazon.,, Book Depository and The Wordery (Both with free worldwide shipping).

I was kindly sent a copy of the book from the artist, however all thoughts and comments are my honest opinion.
