Fantastic Planet by Steve Mcdonald is a large square colouring book of detailed “natural” imagery, ranging from the real to the imagined. There is a mix of wildlife (fish, wolves, zebras, crocodiles), flowers and plants (apple tree, tulips, cherry blossom, sunflowers), and landscapes (mountains, woodland, cliffs, safari, canyon) all in Steve’s distinctive style with a range of thickness of black ink lines breaking down the illustrations into abstract designs. This isn’t a book for careful shading and realism, instead it invites you to bring the illustrations to life solely with colour and have fun doing so.
The paper is medium thickness and smooth so should take most mediums well. The pages are glue and stitch-bound although one really good feature of this book is that the designs do not go all the way into the spine and each design is on a single page (no double page spreads) so they are easy to colour. Instead, the pages themselves are bigger than the usual Johanna Basford book size that seems to have become commonplace now (these are 30cm x 30cm approximately). This book would be stunning to use with paints if you are careful not to use too much water on it as although good quality its not watercolour paper and will warp slightly, or for markers (the pages are printed on both sides though so alcohol markers will spoil the other side, so much better to use water based ones). This is definitely a book to create “art” with, rather than just to colour realistically. The wilder the colours the better (see Steve’s colour thumnails inside the front and back covers to inspire you).
Of all Steve’s books I have seen this is my favourite. It invites you to colour these in a different way to most of the colouring books on the market, but it will be such fun to do.
I was kindly sent a copy by the publisher. All thoughts and comments expressed are my own honest opinion and are not influenced by this fact.
