The Lion Psalms Colouring Book by Antonia Jackson and Felicity French is a small square children’s colouring book. It has a removable paper dust jacket covering a white card cover with a colourable printed cover. It is both glue and stitch bound and has just 32 pages of bright white light to medium weight smooth paper printed with crisp black ink.
On opening the book there is a pretty “This book belongs to….” plate followed by a double page fish design. After the publishing and title pages you are then into the main book. The format of the book is the Psalm is printed on the left page with a colourable detailed frame around it opposite a lovely illustration, although the first in the book does spread across two pages. The last two pages are a double page spread of shells, there is also a list of other Lion religious themed children’s books available. These illustrations are whimsical in style and very detailed for a children’s book and will be enjoyed just as much by adult colourists. the psalms themselves are told in simple english that a child can easily understand. Due to the small details I would recommend this for people with good eyesight and steady hand, although it is clearly printed and none of the details are too small. The best mediums to use will be sharp pencils, fine liners, gel pens or other media with a fine point.
The book was a lot smaller in both size and number of pages than I expected, but don’t let that put you off. There is plenty to colour and the illustrations are lovely. With the addition of the story this will make a lovely gift for a child, either after you have coloured it as a keepsake, or if they colour it themselves. It is one of those rare books that will appeal equally to both children and adults. This is one of the books in the Lion bible colouring books series – there is also another out The Lion Nativity Colouring Book (see also my review of this), and next year there is also The Lion Easter Colouring Book and The Lion Bible Stories Colouring book to follow, so if you enjoy this one you may wish to collect the series. I really like this book and highly recommend it, especially if you like using fineliners and colouring details.
I was kindly sent a copy by the publisher. All thoughts and comments are my own honest opinion and are not influenced by this fact.
