Fairies by Alena Lazareva is available in both Line Art and Grayscale versions (Click here for my review and links to buy Grayscale version). The book is A4 in size and glue bound with a glossy coloured cover of one of Alena’s beautiful original digital paintings, the illustration of which is inside the book for you to colour. It is self-published on Amazon Createspace and this means that the paper is quite thin (copier type paper) although it has improved a lot recently as it is smoother and takes pencils much better than it did without lots of blending. The pages are one-sided so if you wish to use markers (just use a spare sheet of paper behind the one you are colouring in case of bleed-through).
There are a total of 25 illustrations of Alena’s beautiful women fairies, each one unique in look and personality so none of the pictures feel like a repeat. The ink is crisp and clear making it easy to recognise each part of the illustration. Alongside the fairies there are flowers, leaves and fungi and some are accompanied by their animal friends including cats, squirrels, birds, butterflies, rabbits and even a peacock. Each illustration is stunning and will be a joy to colour. There are a bonus 5 Grayscale illustrations to colour from a variety of Alena’s books which will give you a taster of this technique if you have never tried it and are not sure if it is for you or not.
I chose to colour this beautiful design of a fairy with a peacock as I love colouring skin and hair ( I found it daunting for so long, now I love it!). I used Prismacolor Premier Pencils.
I was kindly sent a copy by the artist. All opinions expressed however are my own.
